New Jersey Immigration Attorney Explains How to Replace a Lost Naturalization Certificate
As a dedicated New Jersey Immigration Attorney, clients often ask me about the naturalization certificate and how to replace it if it’s lost. Many times people come to my office, a US citizen looking to sponsor a family member. When I give them the list of the documents that they require, one of them includes proof of citizenship, including their original naturalization certificate. Then they go into a panic because they think they lost or misplaced it.
They ask me to help them replace it. It is doable but it takes a long time almost a year. There’s a form that immigration put out called the N-565, which is specifically to use when you need a replacement naturalization certificate. There are many reasons to replace your certificate. One could be because it’s lost or destroyed or damaged, or there’s been a typographical error when it was issued. Sometimes there’s been a name change ordered by the court or sometimes there’s been a change of gender. It is very important that you put in safe place which you remember.
