Happy Memorial Day

Memorial Day is celebrated every year on the last Monday in May. This year it falls on May 26th. This national holiday was created to honor U.S. soldiers who died in service. Originating in 1868, it was first called Decoration Day and created to honor the soldiers who died in the Civil War. Memorial Day has now become synonymous with the beginning of the summer season.

IMMIGRATION REFORM SHOWS SIGNS OF LIFE

Speaker John A. Boehner, according to the “Wall Street Journal” admitted to say “hell bent” on tackling immigration this year. Immigration for the last couple of weeks has been one of the hottest topics in Washington after the two-week-recess. Signs of life to push this new immigration reform passed by the Senate last year have been imminent across the country. Senator Mike Lee, the Utah Republican mentioned that most members of the Republican conference are eager to pass some sort of immigration reform, and also stated that the legislation needs to be taken one step at a time.

In Texas, Republican Jose L. Barton mentioned about introducing his own bill that would include a path to citizenship for children, legal status for some adults, and a guest worker program. Washington’s fourth-ranked Republican in the House, Cathy McMorris highly believes that an immigration deal can be struck this year by August. The Speaker Boehner himself in Ohio mocked the opponents of action on immigration. Activists are putting strong pressure on President Barack Obama and other leading Democrats. Despite much positive talk about an immigration reform, there is still some opposition in the House of Representatives by many Republicans, but there is no doubt that a decision is closer than ever before.

CINCO DE MAYO TO PUSH IMMIGRATION REFORM

President Barack Obama uses Cinco De Mayo, Mexican national holiday to remind Republicans to follow yo on legislation that passed the Senate last year. He is encouraging Latino Lawmakers and advocates to push House Republicans to act on a broad overhaul of immigration laws. This new Senate bill would expand border security and provide a path to citizenship for many of the 11 million immigrants who are in the United States illegally. Vice-President Biden shared a strong message; “those immigrants share American values, they may not be citizens, but they are Americans”.
