New Jersey Immigration Lawyer Discusses Eligibility of the U-Visa for Abuse Victims
Many times as a New Jersey Immigration Lawyer, I am asked about getting a U-Visa if you were abused by a former spouse. A U-Visa is made available to victims of violent crimes. One of the key ways to obtain a U-Visa is the willingness to help the police during the domestic abuse case. You will be required to filling out a I-918 form which you must sign and have certified by the police that says you are cooperating with law enforcement to resolve the crime you were a victim of. I advise my clients as a New Jersey Immigration Lawyer that if the U-Visa is approved, you will be able to acquire a work permit for three years, and a valid social security number. After the three years with the U-Visa, you will be eligible to apply for a Green Card.
